Vienna's in the Mood for Dancing
Compagnie Marie Chouinard "Les trous du ciel"
The festival gets underway with an outdoor performance by India's Terence Lewis Dance Company - admission to the show in the main courtyard of the MuseumsQuartier on July 13, 2011 is free. For a whole month ImPulsTanz will showcase world premieres, pieces by innovative newcomers and works from the early days of contemporary dance. Liquid Loft/Chris Haring and Christine Gaigg from Austria will celebrate maiden performances in 2011. Meanwhile, Mouvement from Canada's Cie. Marie Chouinard will also be breaking new ground in Europe this year. Charismatic Belgian dance company Ultima Vez will be back on stage this summer with two pieces: Monkey Sandwich, a film accompanied by a dance solo and visual effects; and Oedipus/bêt noir which plays out to the blues music of Roland Van Campenhout. The portfolio of Belgian artist Jan Fabre and his company Troubleyn will feature prominently at ImpulsTanz 2011.
Dance enthusiasts can draw inspiration from a 200-strong series of dance workshops at Vienna's former Arsenal. Archie Burnett from the USA will teach Voguing and Waacking, Robert Steijn from the Netherlands will provide a spiritual angle with his Tarot Dance Techniques, while Austria's Sabine Sonnenschein initiates students into the erotic dimension of dance through the medium of Contact Improvisation and Tantra. Oumou Mariko will teach Dances of Mali, and Drissa Kone will be focusing on West African percussion. Dancers of all abilities can learn the steps to the pieces in the festival repertoire at the various Repertory Workshops.
