Winding alleyways, arcaded courtyards, beautiful city palaces - Vienna's historic old town is also its romantic heart. In the oldest parts of the capital around St. Stephen's Cathedral the streets are still cobbled as they were centuries ago. A stroll along Blutgasse and Domgasse is like stepping back into a bygone age. The stunning Biedermeier era buildings in the seventh district's Spittelberg quarter provide the perfect backdrop for a romantic stroll.

Vienna shows its most romantic side in spring, the season of love. The horse chestnut trees in the Prater park are blossoming, thousands of roses are flowering in the Volksgarten, while the lilacs on Heldenplatz are in flower and the evocative scents of spring hang in the air at the city's many other parks. A trip on a horse-drawn fiacre is another popular way to explore Vienna's most romantic sides. Fans of unspoilt nature should head for the city's outskirts and the vineyards of the nineteenth district. The greenery and birdsong of the Vienna Woods provide a pleasant setting for taking in some of the most breathtaking views of the city. The best way to round out the day is at one of Vienna's traditional Heuriger wine taverns, which have been a mecca for young lovers since time immemorial. A cruise along the Old Danube is always an idyllic experience, particularly under a full moon.

Died-in-the-wool romantics will be in their element at one of the capital's countless balls - which play out throughout the year, and not just during the carnival season. Elsewhere, options for spending a romantic evening on the dance floor include Volksgarten Tanzcafé, where tango, cha-cha-cha and boogie are on the menu, or on deck on one of the Danube cruisers. Vienna is also the perfect destination for the wedding of your dreams. Venues include the city's leading attractions such as Schönbrunn Palace, the Giant Ferris Wheel, the Butterfly House or even aboard a vintage tram.
