Vienna: More visitor bednights than ever in the first half of 2018

“Vienna's anniversary year on Viennese Modernism with over 30 exhibitions is proving to be a huge attraction,” reports Director of Tourism Norbert Kettner. In the first half of 2018 the City of Vienna established a new record of around 7,223,000 visitor bednights, an increase of 4.1%. Vienna's ten strongest source markets in this period were headed by Austria with 1,466,000 bednights (+8% on the same period the previous year), followed by Germany (1,455,000, +2%), the USA (401,000, +1%), the United Kingdom (309,000, +1%) and Italy (292,000, –1%). They were followed in places 6 to 10 by Russia (228,000, +8%), Switzerland (208,000, –3%), France (203,000, –1%), China (197,000, +12%) and Spain (164,000, –6%). Net room revenues of 291 million euros generated by the hospitality industry – currently evaluated for January thru’ May 2018 – grew by 4.9%. Some 80% of all bednights were attributable to international visitors. The Viennese hospitality sector has an accommodation capacity of approximately 67,000 hotel beds.

Vienna aims to achieve 18 million visitor bednights in the year 2020. Local residents support the city's tourism objectives: 96% of locals consider tourism positive for Vienna and about two-thirds are in favor of further growth. In the most recent Mercer “Quality of Living” survey, Vienna ranked in first place worldwide for the ninth time in succession. And according to the latest ranking of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), the city takes second place as a congress metropolis.
