Vienna Media News 09/2021 Curtain Up This Fall

The Barber of Seville at the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera is the capital’s top opera venue. At the end of September, it will be staging the first of five new productions for the 2021/22 season: Gioachino Rossini’s The Barber of Seville. Herbert Fritsch has come up with a completely new production for the comic opera, while Michele Mariotti is musical director. Tenor Juan Diego Flórez will shine in the role of Counta Almaviva. He will also sing the great Cessa di più resistere aria – which is often cut due to its length and incredible technical difficulty. The French mezzosoprano Marianne Crebassa has been cast as Rosina, with the Italian baritone Davide Luciano landing the title role of the extroverted barber. (Premiere: Sep 28, 2021, performances: Oct 1, 4, 7, 10, 14, 2021)

Three Operas at the Theater an der Wien

The fall schedule at the Theater an der Wien features three premieres this year. September will set the ball rolling with the 1600 allegorical opera Rappresentazione di Anima et di Corpo by Emilio de’ Cavalieri. Conducted by Giovanni Antonini, it features a stunning cast of fantastic soloists including Anett Fritsch as Anima and Dani Schmutzhard as Corpo. The Il Giardino Armonico orchestra specializes in period sounds. The Arnold Schoenberg Choir, headed by Erwin Ortner, is one of the most in-demand vocal ensembles in Vienna. (Premiere: Sep 19, 2021, performances: Sep 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 2021)

The debuts continue in October, with Benjamin Britten’s first publicly and critically-acclaimed opera, Peter Grimes. The work, which debuted in 1945, will be performed in the Opera Award-winning Christoph Loy production. (Premiere: Oct 16, 2021, performances: Oct 18, 20, 23, 25, 2021)

And November will see the first performance of a new production of Alfredo Catalani’s lyrical drama La Wally. Izabela Matula has been cast in the lead, and Andrés Orozco-Estrada will conduct the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. (Premiere: Nov 12, 2021, performances: Nov 15, 17, 19, 22, 25, 2021)

Football Operetta and Der Rosenkavalier at the Volksoper

Csárdás folk dance and penalty kicks, sequined gowns and football shirts – the Volksoper will be breathing fresh life into Paul Abraham’s operetta Roxy und ihr Wunderteam in September. Directed by Andreas Gergen in his Volksoper debut, this dazzling cabaret operetta is bursting with humor, sex appeal and all the testosterone of a starting eleven. The musical unification of Csárdas, jazz and operetta melodies bears the signature of Kai Tietje. (Premiere: Sep 11, 2021, performances: Sep 15, 20, 24, 28 and Oct 3, 9, 11, 14, 19, 23, 2021)

Richard Strauss’s most popular stage work is set in Vienna. So it comes as quite a surprise to learn that Der Rosenkavalier will be making its first-ever appearance at the Volksoper 110 years down the line at the end of October 2021, in the acclaimed Josef E. Köpplinger production first seen at the Theater Bonn Opera House in 2019. (Premiere: Oct 31, 2021, performances: Nov 4, 7, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 2021)

At Last: Miss Saigon. Music to our Ears!

On September 26 the Raimund Theater will be opening its doors once again after a two-year refurb project. Stars including Carin Filipčić, Ana Milva Gomes, Milica Jovanović, Maya Hakvoort, Lukas Perman, Mark Seibert and Drew Sarich will be dazzling the public with the biggest musical hits in a spectacular opening gala entitled We are Musical. (Additional performances: Sep 28–Oct 3, 2021)

Meanwhile, global smash hit Miss Saigon will be celebrating its Vienna premiere on December 3, 2021. The famously moving love story will cast a spell on audiences with special effects and no end of Far Eastern flair. The fate of young Vietnamese woman Kim and American GI Chris is plotted to perfection. The dramatic descent of the helicopter onto the stage is right up there among the most memorable images in musical theater. Captivating music, stunning choreography, impressive sets and breathtaking stagecraft add up to an unforgettable experience.
Newcomer Vanessa Heinz will be playing Kim in her Vienna debut. Oedo Kuipers – no stranger to the boards in Vienna, having previously starred as Mozart – will play Chris.
